🏒 Stacked 2-on-1 Drill
Sharpen your quick decision-making and offensive instincts in tight spaces.
The Stacked 2-on-1 drill puts players in fast-paced, game-like rush situations where quick thinking and puck movement are essential.
By starting in a stacked formation, the attacking forwards are challenged to create space, read the defense, and execute under pressure — all while the defender works to disrupt passing lanes and force low-quality chances.

Stacked 2-on-1 Drill
✍️ Stacked 2-on-1 Drill Description:
Two forwards line up stacked in a single line, one directly behind the other, with a defenseman positioned behind the second forward — all three in line.
The coach starts the drill by passing a puck to the lead forward or laying a puck into space for them to retrieve.
As soon as the puck is released, the drill begins:
The first forward retrieves or controls the puck and initiates the attack.
The second forward immediately reads and reacts, getting open to provide a strong support option and create a passing lane.
The defenseman must quickly assess the developing rush, anticipate the highest-risk threat, and decide whether to play the puck carrier or take away the passing option.
The play continues until a scoring chance, turnover, or clear is made.
Rotate roles after each rep to give every player experience as both attacker and defender.
💡 Tips for Success:
Forwards: React instantly when the puck is released — create separation and establish passing options before the defender closes the gap.
Puck carrier: Attack with speed and deception; use body fakes or a quick delay to draw the defender out of position.
Supporting forward: Maintain the right spacing — not too close, not too far — and stay available as a passing or rebound option.
Defenseman: Read the rush early. Identify the primary threat and take away the most dangerous play. Use strong stick positioning and controlled footwork to angle the puck carrier.
Coaches: Keep reps short and tempo high — the drill works best when decisions must be made in real time.
🔁 Optional Changes or Add-Ons:
Add a backchecker to force quicker reads and simulate full-speed transitions.
Require one pass before any shot to reinforce puck movement.
Start the puck from different angles (corner, neutral zone, wall rim) to vary reads and entries.
Add a coach-triggered rebound or second puck to extend the play and challenge net-front awareness.
Progress to a Continuous 2-on-1 version for higher tempo and endurance focus.
🧩 Final Thoughts:
The Stacked 2-on-1 is a simple yet powerful drill that keeps players mentally sharp and replicates the pressure of real offensive rushes. Run it at game speed, emphasize communication, and reinforce attacking with purpose to help players translate these reads directly into games.
