Score From Any Setup
Tim Turk
NHL Shooting Coach
Most players practice their shot from a strong, controlled base. Games rarely provide that perfect setup.
Tim Turk breaks down three goals from Jakob Chychrun in one game for the Arizona Coyotes. Each goal comes from a different lower-body formation:
Single-leg formation
Traditional stride formation
Drag/fade-away into a stride-position hip snap
The stride formation provides the foundation. It establishes posture, hip and shoulder positioning, and a strong base from which players can develop other shooting variations.
Learning to shoot from multiple formations allows players to adapt to pressure, puck position, and available space. Combine that versatility with different shot types and release points, and you become much harder for defenders and goaltenders to read.
The goal isn’t to perfect only one shot. It’s to develop the ability to finish from whatever position the game creates.
