The Playmaker Report 🚨
Welcome back, {{firstname | Playmaker}}.
This week’s featured development resource comes from Playmakers Panel coach Jonathan Larsson, whose “Read & Act” drill challenges players to scan early, process pressure, and make better decisions before the puck arrives.
We’re also spotlighting four Hockey Players Club members putting in the work this offseason—from NHL and NCAA training sessions to garage skill development, tournament goals, and goalie reps between the pipes.
Let’s get into it.
📈 Player Development
Jonathan Larsson — Head Coach | Rogle BK J16
The best players don’t wait until they receive the puck to make a decision.
This ‘Read & Act’ drill challenges players to scan early, process pressure, and make quick decisions through multiple changing situations. After an initial pass reception and give-and-go, the player has to read the next layer of pressure, move underneath the stick, execute a cutback, and attack a final one-on-one look.
The value is in the habit: scan, receive, read, act.
Coaching Points:
Scan before the puck arrives
Keep your head up between actions
Read the defender’s stick and body position
Use deception and changes of direction to create space
Make the next play quickly
