A useful 1-on-1 drill as players ramp back up for the season. The puck carrier starts with crossovers to build speed before attacking a stationary defender, forcing both players to read and react instead of simply running through a predetermined move.

For the offensive player, the goal is to make the defender react first. Change your speed, attack an angle, sell one direction, or use the puck to influence the defender before exploiting the space that opens up.

Those reads matter because 1-on-1 situations happen everywhere on the ice. The better players become at manipulating defenders instead of simply reacting to them, the more opportunities they can create.

His recent posts include several impressive finishes from difficult angles, along with offseason training on and off the ice. He’s working on speed on the skating treadmill, handling the puck while keeping his head up, and getting shooting reps in at home.

Put together, it creates a much better picture of Gio as a player than any single highlight could.
