Defenseman Escape & Transition Drill
A no-frills three-cone pattern that hardwires clean pivots, confident escapes, and controlled attacks off the rush — exactly what defensemen need under pressure.
From: Jeremy Szczurek of First Shift Hockey (Instagram | Facebook)
A straightforward, repeatable footwork circuit that reinforces the ability to pivot cleanly, escape pressure, and transition with control.
🎯 Skills Targeted:
Transition footwork for defensemen
Forward-to-backward pivots
Body control through escapes and tight turns
📕 What You’ll Learn:
Escape over each shoulder while maintaining vision
Linking transitions together with control—like you actually would as a defenseman recovering, gapping up, or reversing play
💡 Why Work On This:
Defensemen live in transition—forward to backward, backward to forward, shoulder checks, escapes, and resets.
This drill forces those mechanics in a simple, controlled pattern you can loop over and over.
Even forwards who want better edge control and evasion footwork benefit from this sequence.
🛠️ Equipment Needed:
3 cones + 1 puck
Enough space to loop reps
A net to finish your rep with a shot

Drill Details & Coaching Points
✍️ Drill Description:
Start with a puck at the first cone.
Approach the second cone on its right side.Right-Side Pivot + Right Escape:
At the second cone, pivot from the right side to the left side (opening your body as you transition).
Begin skating backward toward the first cone.
As you approach the first cone, escape over your right shoulder, then immediately tight turn around the first cone, finishing forward again.
Forward Skate to Third Cone:
After the tight turn, skate straight ahead to the third cone, now on the left side of the cone line.
Left-Side Pivot + Left Escape:
At the third cone, pivot from the left side to the right side, transitioning to backwards.
Skate backward toward the second cone.
Right before you arrive, escape over your left shoulder, then complete a tight turn around the second cone, finishing forward again.
Finish the Rep:
After that final escape and tight turn, attack the net with speed and finish with a shot.
📌 Tips for Success:
Treat the footwork as one sequence, not two separate halves. Smooth is the goal.
Scan before each escape—don’t just turn blindly.
Keep your hands loose and your puck control calm.
Use strong cross-unders out of each escape to rebuild speed.
Keep your edges quiet—clean pivots, controlled backward strides, tight body control.
🧩 Optional Changes or Add-Ons:
Add linear crossovers:
After the final escape around the second cone, require a linear crossover between cones 2 and 3, and even one more burst on the way to the net.Add a deke or cutback before shooting:
After the final escape, force players to make a quick cutback, deception move, or simple deke before releasing the puck.Start without a puck (great for younger players):
Run the entire footwork pattern puck-free to nail down pivots and escapes.
Then have them pick up a puck at the second cone on their final escape/turn before attacking the net.Add pressure:
A coach or teammate can trail lightly to force realistic shoulder checks and cleaner escapes.
