Forward & Backward Crossover Skill Drill

Brandon Rubeo
Skills Coach & Co-Founder of Quest Hockey

This drill connects several skating and puck skills into one continuous sequence.

The player moves from forward acceleration into a backward pivot and crossovers, escapes to collect a puck, then transitions back into forward crossovers before attacking the net.

Along the way, they’re working on smooth transitions, soft puck touches, deception and finishing with a pull-in shot to change the shooting angle.

The challenge is connecting each skill without losing speed or control — then transitioning immediately into attack.

🏆 Playmaker of the Week

Celebrating a player whose development, effort, and highlights stood out this week.

One of the coolest parts of building a hockey profile isn’t just showing where your game is today. It’s being able to look back and see how far you’ve come.

Tirumal Rao’s profile does exactly that.

Some of his earliest posts show him working on the basics — his stride, crossovers and skating. Then comes a milestone every hockey player remembers: his first goal.

Since then, he’s continued adding goals, skills work and scrimmage clips as his game develops.

It’s a great example of what Hockey Players Club should be: a place to document your hockey journey, keep learning and share your progress — whether you’re just getting started or have been playing the game your entire life.
